The BibApp development team is happy and proud to announce the 1.0 release of BibApp!

BibApp is a campus research gateway and expert finder. It matches researchers on your campus or research center with their publication data and mines that data to see collaborations, create visualizations of areas of research, and find experts in research areas. With BibApp, it is easy to see what publications can be placed on the Web for greater access and impact. BibApp can push those publications directly into an institutional repository.

BibApp allows researchers and research groups to promote research, find collaborators on campus, and make research more accessible. It also allows libraries to better understand research happening in local departments, facilitate conversations about author rights with researchers, and ease the population of the institutional repository. Finally, BibApp allows campus administrators to achieve a clearer picture of collaboration and scholarly publishing trends on campus.

BibApp is the result of a collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Illinois Informatics Institute at the University of Illinois (https://www.informatics.illinois.edu/icubed/) provided generous funding for the development of the 1.0 release of BibApp.

BibApp is a Ruby on Rails application, coupled with the Solr/Lucene search engine, and either MySQL or PostgreSQL as its datastore. It uses open standards and protocols such as OpenURL and SWORD and automatically pulls in data from third party sources such as Google Books and the Sherpa/Romeo publisher policy database. BibApp imports publication data in RIS, MEDLINE and Refworks XML bibliography formats and exports data in several citation formats (APA, Chicago, IEEE, MLA, more) via CiteProc. BibApp also provides a web services API for delivering data as XML, YML, JSON, and RDF. BibApp is released under a University of Illinois/NCSA Open Source License (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/UoI-NCSA.php).

Live installations of BibApp can be found at:

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — http://connections.ideals.illinois.edu

The MBLWHOI Library at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution — http://bibapp.mbl.edu/

The University of Kansas Medical Center — http://experts.kumc.edu/

Next steps for the project include a 1.1 release that will include internationalization and a richer authentication/authorization system. The team is also in the process of expanding the development community around BibApp.

Their colorful slides will introduce you to the nature and scope of Wendt’s project. Their conference paper discusses why Wendt Library decided to develop and work with BibApp, how they organized and carried out citation capture, and how the BibApp has improved relationships with the departments they serve. Pay close attention to the appendices, which contain all the forms and processes Wendt is using to track CVs and citations!

Our congratulations to Annie Rauh and Jody Hoesly for their successful presentation, and our thanks for their permission to place these materials on our site.

BibApp is on track for a second 1.0 release candidate in February!

A quick BibApp update since it’s been awfully quiet around here!

The BibApp team has been a bit depleted with some staffing changes and leaves, but we are still actively working through bug fixes since our first release candidate in September 2009. Since October 1, 2009 we have committed approximately 40 bug fixes and are well on our way to a second release candidate in early February. We have an active group experimenting with BibApp (see the comments in our Google Group – http://groups.google.com/group/bibapp) and have a pilot of BibApp up at the University of Illinois at http://connections.ideals.illinois.edu.

Please join in the Google Group if you have questions or comments. We welcome all participants!

Alma Swan, in her keynote at this year’s SCONAL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) Conference, namechecked BibApp as one of several services helping to define where repositories will go next. Alma’s talk, entitled “Remember repositories? They were all the rage”, asks all the right questions and points out many of the real life problems being faced by repository managers every day. How do we communicate with the researchers on our campus? How do we promote the services offered by repositories in a way researchers will comprehend? How do we provide the features that are of real interest to these researchers?

Although we’d never go as far as to say BibApp alone is the answer to all these problems, we appreciate being named as one of the services helping to define the future of repositories. One of our goals is to provide easier (and hopefully more useful) ways for researchers to discover and interact with their local repository (and each other). We’re hoping that the upcoming BibApp 1.0 release will be a step in the right direction.

Thanks again for the confidence, Alma!

We’d like to welcome Bill Ingram to the BibApp team!

The University of Illinois has recently hired Bill as a dedicated programmer for the BibApp project for the next year and a half. Bill comes to us from the UIUC NDIIPP project, where he’s one of the primary developers of their Hub and Spoke Framework for digital repositories. Bill was also one of the main developers on the Mellon-funded project exploring the use of OAI-ORE resource maps for scholarly annotation. We’re all excited to have Bill on board, and we know his addition will provide great advancement to the project!

Funding for Bill’s position comes from three main sources:

Illinois Informatics Institute (I3) – 60%

UIUC Library – IDEALS – 20% (until Summer ’09, 40% thereafter)

UIUC NDIIPP Project – 20% (until Summer ’09)

The position was sparked by John Unsworth‘s recent appointment as Director of I3. John is also the Dean of the UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science and has previously written about the BibApp in his chapter, “University 2.0“, of the new EDUCAUSE e-book: The Tower and The Cloud.

A big thanks to I3 and John Unsworth in their support of the BibApp! Look for Bill to become more active in the coming weeks, once he gets his feet wet.

Unsworth describes the BibApp as a “flexible and innovative information service”, which helps to “seam” together university data in a new way. Ultimately, he concludes it is the re-imagination of currently accessible data that will lead to exciting new University 2.0 applications: “What we need more than big science or big servers are good ideas about interesting things that faculty, staff, and students could do with the information produced in, by, and about universities”.

We here at the BibApp definitely agree. Thanks for the write up!
